Venting Categories & Clearances

Venting moves poison: flue gases exit through systems whose categories, materials, and clearances all encode one question — will the CO leave the building? Type B's one-inch clearance and the plastic-pipe rules of condensing appliances anchor the findings.

Categories and materials

Appliance venting families: natural draft (Category I) — buoyant flue gas up masonry chimneys with liners or Type B double-wall vent; Category III/IV (condensing/positive pressure) — fan-driven, cool acidic exhaust through listed plastic (PVC/CPVC/polypropylene) sloping BACK to the appliance to drain condensate; direct-vent sealed systems drawing outdoor combustion air. Material mismatches are findings: single-wall pipe where B-vent belongs, B-vent serving a condensing appliance (acid eats it), unlisted cellular-core PVC on high-heat runs.

Clearances and geometry

The stable number: Type B vent needs 1 inch of clearance to combustibles — measured to the OUTER wall; single-wall connectors need much more (commonly six inches, era/material-dependent — report scorched framing regardless of arithmetic). Geometry: connectors rise continuously (~1/4 in/ft slope) toward the flue, joints secured (three screws), male ends pointing the right way, no sags or dips, length within reason, and terminations per listing — above the roof properly, clear of openings and soffits for sidewall terminations.

Chimney flues and orphaning

Masonry chimneys serving gas appliances need intact liners sized to the load — the classic modern defect: replacing a furnace with a high-efficiency sidewall-vented unit orphans the water heater on a flue sized for both; the oversized, cool flue drafts poorly and condenses acids that shred mortar (rain of debris at the cleanout, spalling brick). Findings: orphaned heaters, unlined flues, debris in cleanouts, abandoned openings unsealed.

Worked example

Post-furnace-upgrade basement: a new 96% condensing furnace vents in PVC out the sidewall — but the PVC runs dead-level for ten feet; the old masonry chimney now serves only the natural-draft water heater, and its cleanout is full of mortar crumbs; the heater's single-wall connector touches a floor joist, which is browned. Report the venting story.

Three findings from one upgrade. The level PVC: condensing exhaust makes water — a level (or wrongly-pitched) vent pools condensate, corrodes prematurely, and can block; re-slope toward the furnace per listing. The chimney: an orphaned water heater — the flue sized for two appliances now drafts one small load: weak draft plus condensation, and the mortar crumbs in the cleanout are the liner's flesh; evaluation/relining (or heater replacement strategy) referral. The connector: single-wall pipe CONTACTING wood with browning — the clearance principle violated with thermal evidence already visible: immediate correction. The lesson the exam loves: every efficiency upgrade rewrites the venting math for whatever stays behind.

Common exam pitfalls

Passing the old chimney because it 'always worked.'

Removing the furnace changed the flue's math — orphaned heaters on oversized flues are a named, common defect.

Ignoring slope on plastic venting.

Condensing exhaust is wet — vents pitch back to the appliance to drain; level runs pool and fail.

Measuring clearance while ignoring scorch.

Browned/charred framing is the verdict regardless of inches — report thermal evidence as the finding.

Match the pipe to the appliance, pitch the wet ones home, keep an inch around the B — and never orphan a water heater.
