How do I get a real estate licence in Australia?
Requirements vary by state. The usual starting point is the CPP41419 Certificate IV in Real Estate Practice (or specified units from it) through a registered training organisation (RTO); there is no government licensing exam. In NSW, for example, you can start as an assistant agent with a Certificate of Registration after the five core units, then need the full Certificate IV plus 12 months as an assistant agent for a Class 2 licence. You then apply to your state regulator, which also checks you are fit and proper to hold a licence.

It consists of 18 units of competency covering agency practice, property marketing, sales, property management, and compliance. Assessment is competency-based rather than a single standardised exam.
How long does it take to get licensed in Australia?
It depends on the RTO, the delivery mode and how much time you can study; there is no set duration for the Certificate IV. In NSW you can start working sooner as an assistant agent: the Certificate of Registration needs only the five core units (CPPREP4001–4005), is valid for 4 years and cannot be renewed. Ask each RTO for its expected completion time.
Can I transfer my real estate licence between Australian states?
Not automatically — each state issues its own licences. Under the Mutual Recognition Act 1992 you can apply for the equivalent licence or registration in another state based on the one you already hold. NSW, Victoria and WA also allow some interstate licensees to work under automatic mutual recognition (Queensland does not participate). Check the process and any conditions with the regulator in the state you are moving to.
