Devices, Fixtures & Junction Boxes
~10 min read · Spot open splices, missing covers, reversed polarity and other everyday unsafe conditions.
Devices are where occupants meet electricity: receptacles, switches, fixtures, and boxes. The findings are unglamorous and constant — reversed polarity, open grounds, missing covers, overlamped fixtures — and each has a mechanism worth one sentence in the report.
Receptacles
Test a representative sample: reversed polarity (hot and neutral swapped — appliance shells and lamp sockets stay energized when switched 'off'), open ground, open neutral (dead or flickering), loose devices that won't grip a plug (worn contacts — arcing and heat), heat discoloration, and paint-filled slots. Two-prong-to-three-prong adapters and cheater plugs in service mark ungrounded circuits being 'solved' by the occupant. Damaged and broken devices are per-se; backstab connections behind chronic flicker deserve a mention.

Switches and fixtures
Switches: function test, warm dimmer plates (overloaded dimmers), buzzing (arcing internals). Fixtures: overlamping — bulbs exceeding the fixture's labeled wattage cook insulation above (scorch rings on the ceiling; brittle conductor insulation in the canopy); closet fixtures too close to shelves (the incandescent-in-the-closet fire pattern); missing globes over bare bulbs in closets/storage; ceiling-fan wobble (wrong box — fans need fan-rated boxes); and exterior fixtures without wet/damp listings filling with water.

Boxes and covers
Every splice and device lives in a covered, accessible box: missing cover plates (finger-contact exposure), open splices, boxes overfilled or with cables unclamped (sharp knockout edges cutting insulation), flying splices feeding garage door openers and attic fans, and extension cords stapled as permanent wiring. Missing knockout plugs in boxes and panels complete the small-but-real exposure list.
Worked example
A den tour: the table lamp's shell tingles a user (tester shows reversed polarity at that receptacle); the ceiling fixture wears a brown halo and holds two 100-watt bulbs over a '60W MAX' label; the ceiling fan sways an inch at speed; and behind the TV, a receptacle hangs half-out of the wall gripping plugs so loosely they droop. Report the room.
The tingling lamp: reversed polarity puts the shell and socket screw on the hot side — energized whenever plugged in, switch position irrelevant; rewire the receptacle (and ask how many siblings the tester finds). The halo fixture: overlamping at 167% of rating has been baking the canopy conductors — brittle insulation risk above the ceiling; correct lamping and evaluate the fixture wiring. The swaying fan: almost certainly hung on a standard box — fan-rated box required before it exits the ceiling. The drooping receptacle: worn contacts arc under load and the loose mounting compounds it — replace and secure. Four devices, four one-sentence mechanisms — that's the device section done right.
Common exam pitfalls
Dismissing reversed polarity as 'it still works.'
Working is the problem — the shell side stays hot; the mechanism sentence belongs in the report.
Ignoring wattage labels in fixtures.
Scorch halos and brittle canopy wiring are overlamping's fingerprints — check bulbs against the label.
Testing only convenient receptacles.
Sample every room and exterior — patterns (whole circuits reversed or ungrounded) matter more than single devices.
Right-side-hot, tight-gripped, boxed, covered, and lamped to the label — everything else is a finding.
