Radio Calls & Traffic Awareness
~11 min read · Understand CTAF phraseology and build a mental picture of pattern traffic.
You will probably never transmit on an aviation radio — but the exam expects you to understand what the manned traffic around you is saying, on which frequency, and what a self-announced pattern call tells you about where that airplane will be in sixty seconds.
CTAF: the party line
At non-towered airports, pilots self-announce position and intentions on the Common Traffic Advisory Frequency — often a UNICOM frequency like 122.8 or 122.7 (printed in the airport data block with a circled C). There is no controller and no clearances: safety comes from everyone announcing and listening. A drone crew near such an airport should monitor CTAF with a handheld or scanner to hear inbound traffic before it appears.

Decoding position reports
Calls follow a pattern: airport name, aircraft, position, intention, airport name — 'Midwest traffic, Cessna 4-5-Bravo, left downwind runway 27, touch and go, Midwest.' Decode: the aircraft is abeam the runway on the downwind leg for runway 27 (landing to the west), turning base then final within a minute or two. Standard pattern legs: upwind, crosswind, downwind, base, final, flown at ~1,000 ft AGL, standard turns to the LEFT unless the airport designates right traffic.
- Name–ID–position–intention–name format
- Runway number = magnetic heading ÷ 10 (runway 27 ≈ 270°)
- 'Left downwind' places the aircraft parallel to the runway, opposite the landing direction
Phonetic alphabet and numbers
Letters transmit as the ICAO phonetic alphabet (Alfa, Bravo, Charlie … Zulu); numbers digit by digit ('one-two-two point eight'), with 'niner' for nine. The exam may ask you to interpret an identifier or frequency spoken phonetically. Emergency frequency 121.5 MHz is guarded by many aircraft and ATC facilities.
Worked example
You are surveying a barn 1.5 NM southeast of a non-towered airport with runway 13/31. On your scanner: 'Fairfield traffic, Piper 8-1-Foxtrot, entering left downwind runway 31, full stop, Fairfield.' Where is the traffic, and does it concern your 350-ft operation?
Runway 31 points ~310° (landing to the northwest). Left downwind for 31 runs parallel to the runway on its southwest side, flying southeast-ish at ~1,000 ft AGL, followed by base and final that sweep southeast of the field — toward your sector. The airplane will descend through low altitude on final, aligned northwest. Your barn 1.5 NM southeast sits near the extended final approach path: exactly where a descending Piper will be in two minutes. Response: pause the survey or descend and hold well clear until the aircraft lands — you must yield right of way, and a landing aircraft on final owns the sky.
Common exam pitfalls
Ignoring radio traffic because drones don't transmit.
Listening is the value: position reports tell you where manned traffic will be before you can see it.
Misreading runway numbers as arbitrary labels.
Runway number × 10 ≈ magnetic landing heading. Runway 31 traffic lands heading ~310°.
Forgetting patterns default to LEFT turns.
Left traffic is standard; right traffic is the charted/marked exception (RP or segmented circle).
Hear them before you see them: name, who, where, what, name.
