Vision, Illusions & Fatigue

~10 min read · Account for scanning technique, empty-field myopia, dehydration and medications.

The remote pilot's body is a sensor package with known failure modes: eyes that can't focus on empty sky, illusions that mislead at dusk, dehydration that degrades judgment before thirst reports it. The exam tests vision technique and the physiological states that quietly disqualify you.

Vision and effective scanning

Daytime scanning works by sectors: move the eyes in a series of short, regularly spaced movements (about 10° at a time), pausing seconds per sector — motion is detected best at rest, not while sweeping. Empty-field myopia: with nothing to focus on (a featureless sky), the eyes relax to a focal distance of a few meters and traffic goes unseen — periodically refocus on the most distant available object. At night, the fovea's cones are useless in dim light: use off-center viewing (look 5–10° away from the target so rod-rich peripheral retina picks it up), and allow ~30 minutes for full dark adaptation, protecting it from bright light.

Illusions and disorientation

At dusk and night, distance and altitude judgments degrade: an aircraft's lights against sparse ground lighting can seem nearer or farther than reality; autokinesis makes a stared-at single light appear to move — scan, don't stare. For a ground-based pilot, the dominant errors are misjudging the drone's distance/height at long range and losing orientation (which way is it facing?) — mitigated by orientation lights, attitude displays, and disciplined VLOS distances.

The body's quiet degraders

Dehydration and heat stress erode concentration and decision speed long before thirst is compelling — field crews standing in sun for hours are a textbook case; drink on schedule, use shade. Fatigue (acute and chronic) slows scanning and risk perception and is not curable by caffeine or will. Medications: many OTC drugs — sedating antihistamines above all — impair reaction and judgment; operating with an impairing condition or drug violates 107.17/107.27. Stress stacks: life stress plus mission pressure consumes the same cognitive capacity that emergencies demand.

  • Hydrate on schedule; heat degrades judgment early

  • Sedating antihistamines and similar OTC meds = grounded

Worked example

Hour three of a summer solar-farm inspection, 34°C, no shade. The VO has stopped talking much; your last water was at breakfast. You catch yourself staring at the screen, and twice you've lost the aircraft against the bright sky and struggled to reacquire it. What is happening, and what should the crew do?

Multiple physiological threads: dehydration and heat stress (hours in sun, no water) degrading both crew members' attention; empty-field myopia making visual reacquisition against featureless sky slow — the eyes have relaxed to short focus; screen fixation replacing the scan. The correct call is an operational pause: land, hydrate, get shade, rotate duties, and resume with disciplined sector scanning and periodic distant refocus (use the far tree line). The exam-level takeaways: reacquisition difficulty against empty sky = empty-field myopia; performance decay in heat = dehydration acting before thirst; and the remedy is always to interrupt the operation, not push through.

Common exam pitfalls

Scanning with smooth sweeping eye movements.

Motion detection happens with eyes at rest — scan in stepped sectors with pauses.

Looking directly at faint objects at night.

The fovea is night-blind. Look 5–10° off-center and let peripheral vision find the light.

Waiting for thirst to schedule water.

Cognitive decline precedes thirst. Drink on schedule during long field operations.
