EstatePass vs OnCourse Prep xL (2026)
A $9.99 subscription against the category’s $199 incumbent — the same core job, two very different bets on how long you will need it.
OnCourse Learning’s Prep xL is the consolidating leader in NMLS test prep — it absorbed CompuCram’s mortgage vertical, and its simulated exams are widely described as the closest thing to the real Pearson VUE screen. It costs $199 for one year.
EstatePass approaches the same exam as a subscription: the full national bank plus state-portion content, AI-tiered explanations, and a free tier you can evaluate before paying anything. The honest question is not which is "better" but which shape fits your timeline.

Where each one wins
Price
EstatePass
A one-year Prep xL license costs $199. EstatePass costs $9.99 a month — about $30 for a typical three-month prep window, or $39.99 once for lifetime access. Even studying for a full year, the subscription lands far cheaper.
Question volume
OnCourse Learning (Prep xL)
Prep xL publishes 1,825+ questions against our 1,694 national items. It is a real edge, though both banks are far past the 800–1,200 most candidates work through before test day.
Simulation realism
OnCourse Learning (Prep xL)
Eleven simulated exams built to mirror the Pearson VUE interface is Prep xL’s strongest feature, and the reason it gets recommended. Our mocks match the blueprint and timing but not the testing-center chrome.
Explanations
EstatePass
Every EstatePass answer carries a tiered explanation — one line, full reasoning, or a deep dive on the regulation. Prep xL generates AI explanations too, but tiering is what lets you move fast on easy misses and slow down on Reg Z.
Try before you buy
EstatePass
We have a permanent free tier: 20 answers a day, no card. Prep xL has no free trial on the self-study product, so $199 is decided on the sales page.
Access window
EstatePass
Prep xL expires after a year. A subscription runs as long as you need and stops when you pass; lifetime is $39.99 if your timeline is unpredictable.
Pass guarantee
OnCourse Learning (Prep xL)
Neither self-study product carries a cash guarantee — but OnCourse sells an instructor-led MLO Test Ready tier that does (with strict attendance and deadline conditions). If a guarantee matters to you, they have a path and we do not.
Beyond one exam
EstatePass
One EstatePass subscription also covers real estate, insurance, appraiser, and contractor prep. Prep xL is mortgage-only — irrelevant if MLO is all you need, decisive if you are stacking licenses.
EstatePass
Our product$9.99/mo
EstatePass is the drill-first option: the full national bank with worked explanations, real-blueprint mocks, and a wrong book that schedules your reviews. It replaces the $130–$200 one-shot products with a $9.99 subscription you can cancel the day you pass — and the 20-questions-a-day free tier means you can evaluate it against every product below before spending anything.
PROS
- 1,694 SAFE National questions with AI-tiered explanations, plus state-portion add-ons for all 50 states
- Mock exams composed at the real five-topic blueprint, with a readiness verdict after two mocks
- Free study notes, 20 interactive video lessons, math drills, and a spaced-repetition wrong book
- A fraction of the price of everything else on this list — and the free tier needs no card
CONS
- No live instructor or cram-class option
- No cash pass guarantee — the free diagnostic tells you if you are ready instead
OnCourse Learning (Prep xL)
$199
Prep xL is the consolidating leader in dedicated NMLS test prep — the biggest bank, the most realistic simulated exams, and now CompuCram’s former mortgage customers too. Just know what the $199 buys: the celebrated pass guarantee lives on the pricier instructor-led program, with strict attendance and deadline conditions.
PROS
- Largest verified question bank (1,825+) and the most simulated exams (11)
- Simulated exams widely praised for feeling closest to the real Pearson VUE screen
- 800+ flashcards and an AI study partner with adaptive study plans
- CompuCram’s MLO product was folded into this one — it absorbed its main rival
CONS
- The pass guarantee attaches to the expensive instructor-led MLO Test Ready tier, not this $199 self-study product
- Access expires after one year; no free trial on the self-study product
Which should you pick?

- You want to test-drive the explanations before paying anything
- Your exam date might move, and a one-year clock makes you nervous

Choose OnCourse Learning (Prep xL) if…
- Interface-accurate simulated exams are worth $199 to you on their own
- You want the biggest published question bank in the category
- Your employer reimburses prep and price is not the constraint
- You may upgrade to their instructor-led tier for the pass guarantee
How we compared: We compared verified price, practice-question count, simulated-exam realism, video/live instruction, access windows, and guarantee terms. Every number was checked on the vendor’s official page on 2026-08-28; where a vendor hides pricing behind a wall we say “unverified” instead of repeating third-party guesses. Vendor pass-rate claims are labeled as claims.
Disclosure: EstatePass is our own product and is labeled wherever it appears. Competitor prices and features were checked against each vendor's official site on 2026-08-28; anything we could not verify is marked as such rather than estimated. Tell us if something here is out of date.
FAQ
Is OnCourse Prep xL the same as CompuCram’s old MLO product?
Effectively yes. CompuCram discontinued its mortgage exam prep and now directs buyers to Prep xL; existing CompuCram customers keep access for six months from purchase. Any roundup still ranking "CompuCram MLO" as a separate product is out of date.
Can I use both?
Plenty of people do, and it is not unreasonable: drill daily on the subscription, then buy the one-year license close to test day for interface-accurate simulations. Just be honest about whether the second purchase buys practice or reassurance.
Does EstatePass cover my state portion?
Yes. The SAFE National content every state uses is the core bank, and state-portion questions are included for all 50 states in the same subscription, along with mortgage videos, study notes, and math drills.
How many questions do I actually need before the exam?
A common benchmark is 800–1,200 questions with explanations read, plus at least two full 120-question timed mocks scoring 80%+. Both products clear that bar; the difference is what you pay to get there and how long you keep access.
