Best NMLS Exam Prep (2026)
Six SAFE MLO test-prep products compared on verified price, question depth, and what the pass guarantees actually cover.
The SAFE MLO National Test is 120 questions (115 scored), 190 minutes, 75% to pass — and NMLS reports roughly half of first-time takers clear it. Each attempt costs $110, and a fail locks you out for 30 days, so the cost of walking in unready is real.
Test prep here splits into question-bank products (drill until your mock scores clear 75%), video courses (learn RESPA, TILA, and Reg Z from the ground up), and live cram classes. Below is what each of the six main options actually charges and delivers — checked on their own sites, same day.

The CE Shop (Exam Prep Edge)
Slickest interfaceUnverified
pricing behind a verification wall; frequent promo codes
The CE Shop brings the most modern learning interface in mortgage prep and the same diagnostic-first philosophy we use. The catch for comparison shoppers: neither its price nor its question count is published where we could verify it, so you are buying partly on brand.

PROS
- Diagnostic-first: a free initial assessment maps strengths and weaknesses before you study
- Modern dashboard with per-topic scores and a “ready to test” indicator

CONS
- We could not verify current pricing or question counts on their site — both sit behind walls
- Exam prep is often positioned as an upsell inside pre-licensing bundles

How we compared: We compared verified price, practice-question count, simulated-exam realism, video/live instruction, access windows, and guarantee terms. Every number was checked on the vendor’s official page on 2026-08-28; where a vendor hides pricing behind a wall we say “unverified” instead of repeating third-party guesses. Vendor pass-rate claims are labeled as claims.
Disclosure: EstatePass is our own product and is clearly marked wherever it appears. Competitor prices and features were checked against each vendor's official site on 2026-08-28; where we could not verify a number we say so instead of guessing. Found something out of date? Tell us and we'll fix it.
FAQ
What happened to CompuCram’s NMLS prep?
It was discontinued. CompuCram’s mortgage exam prep page now redirects buyers to OnCourse Learning’s Prep xL, and existing customers keep access for six months from purchase. If a roundup still ranks “CompuCram MLO” as a standalone product, it is out of date.
How hard is the NMLS SAFE exam?
Harder than most licensing exams: NMLS publishes first-attempt pass rates in the mid-50s percent range. The blueprint is five areas — federal law, ethics, mortgage products, origination knowledge, and uniform state content — and the questions test application, not recall. Failing costs $110 and a 30-day lockout.
How many practice questions should I do before the exam?
A common benchmark is 800–1,200 questions with explanations read, plus at least two full 120-question timed mocks scoring 80%+ before you book. The volume matters less than the loop: miss, read why, and re-attempt via a wrong book until it stays fixed.
Are the pass guarantees worth anything?
Read the terms. MEC refunds up to the $110 exam fee with strict completion conditions; OnCourse’s guarantee only attaches to its instructor-led tier; Mometrix offers a 7-day refund, not a pass guarantee. No vendor’s claimed pass rate is independently audited.
Does EstatePass cover my state’s portion of the test?
Yes — the SAFE National content (which every state uses) is the core bank, and state-portion add-on questions are included for all 50 states. One subscription covers both, along with the mortgage videos, study notes, and math drills.
