Gas piping is assembled from threaded sections, and threaded joints resist tension and pressure well but tolerate bending poorly. Support at specified intervals keeps each run straight so its weight is carried by hangers rather than by the joints. Stretch the spacing and the pipe sags between supports, which puts a bending moment directly on the threaded connections at each end of the span. Over time that stress works the joint, and a gas joint that loosens leaks into whatever space it occupies. Sagging also creates low points where condensate and pipe scale collect, which can restrict flow to an appliance. The inspector reports inadequate support as a condition to correct rather than waiting for evidence of a leak, because the failure develops silently.
