An outdoor condensing unit rejects the heat the system removed from the house, and it does that by moving a large volume of outdoor air across the condenser coil. The fan pulls air in through the coil on the sides and discharges it upward. Vegetation packed against the unit obstructs that intake, so less air passes through, less heat leaves, and condensing temperature and pressure rise. The consequences follow directly: reduced capacity, longer run times, higher energy use, and elevated compressor discharge temperatures that shorten equipment life. Foliage also sheds leaves and seeds into the coil fins, which restricts it further and holds moisture against the fins. Manufacturers specify clearances on all sides and above for exactly this reason, and the inspector reports the obstruction with the recommended clearance rather than merely noting overgrowth.
