A hydronic baseboard unit is a heat exchanger built for one job: move heat from water in a pipe into room air. The pipe carries the water, and the closely spaced metal fins pressed onto it multiply the surface in contact with air by a large factor. Convection does the rest — air warms at the fins, rises, and pulls cooler air in at the bottom of the enclosure. Crushing the fins collapses the air channels between them and reduces the effective surface area, so less heat transfers per foot of element even though the water flow through the pipe is unchanged. This is why the defect shows as a cool room rather than as a system fault: flow, pressure and boiler operation are all normal.
