Intro
Signs, signals and road markings talk to you in shapes and colors. Let's decode five of them from the Texas Driver Handbook. For each one, pick your answer before I reveal it.
Situation 1
It's early morning. You come up to a stop sign and the cross street looks completely empty. No cars, no people. At a stop sign, is slowing down enough if no one is coming? The answer is C: No. You must come to a complete stop. A stop sign means come to a complete stop, yield, and then proceed carefully. Slowing down is not adequate. Even with nobody around, a stop sign means a full stop. Come to a complete stop, look, yield if needed, then go carefully.
Situation 2
Driving through farmland, you spot a round yellow sign up ahead on the right. A round yellow sign warns you of what? The answer is A: A railroad crossing ahead. Round signs are used for railroad advance warning. Round is the shape to remember: it's the advance warning for a railroad crossing. Slow down and get ready to look and listen for trains.
Situation 3
After a heavy storm, you find a barricade across the road. Past it, water is flowing over the pavement. Is it legal to drive around a barricade placed where water covers the road? The answer is A: No. It is a Class B misdemeanor. Driving around a warning sign or barricade at a location where water is over the road is a Class B misdemeanor. Driving around that barricade isn't just risky, it's a Class B misdemeanor in Texas. Turn around and find another route.
Situation 4
On a long highway trip, you're getting hungry, and a blue sign appears beside the road. A blue road sign gives you what kind of information? The answer is A: Motorist services, such as fuel or food. Blue signs give motorist services guidance. Blue signs point you to motorist services, like fuel, food or lodging. They guide you; they don't give orders.
Situation 5
You're in the left turn lane. The signal shows a red light, and next to it, a green arrow pointing left. You see a green arrow together with a red light. What may you do? The answer is B: Go in the direction of the arrow after yielding to vehicles and pedestrians. A green arrow with a red light lets you go carefully in the arrow’s direction after yielding to other vehicles and pedestrians. The green arrow lets you go in its direction, but carefully: yield to any vehicles and pedestrians still in the intersection first.
