In short

Once the lead vehicle has cleared an intersection, the rest of the procession may proceed and other traffic must yield. If you are the driver entering the highway, you must yield to the exiting driver. The first vehicle to reach the intersection goes first.

The five situations

Pick an answer first, the way the video pauses for you. Each one cites the Pennsylvania Driver's Manual.

Right-of-way comes down to one question: who goes first? Let's work through five everyday situations from the Pennsylvania Driver's Manual. For each one, pick your answer before I reveal it.

0:17Situation 1

A funeral procession is moving through an intersection, and the lead car has already crossed. The lead car of a funeral procession has cleared an intersection. What must other traffic do? The answer is C: Yield and let the procession pass. Once the lead vehicle has cleared an intersection, the rest of the procession may proceed and other traffic must yield. Once the lead car has cleared, the rest of the procession may proceed. Yield and let it pass.

1:18Situation 2

You're entering a highway on a short lane that drivers leaving the highway also use. You are entering a highway on a short weaving lane that exiting drivers also use. Who must yield? The answer is B: You, the entering driver. If you are the driver entering the highway, you must yield to the exiting driver. In a weaving lane, the driver entering yields to the driver exiting.

2:12Situation 3

You and another car reach a four-way stop at exactly the same time. The other car is on your right. Two cars reach a four-way stop at the same time from different directions. Who goes first? The answer is C: The driver on the right. The first vehicle to reach the intersection goes first. If two arrive at the same time, the driver on the left yields to the driver on the right. First to arrive goes first. On a tie, the driver on the left yields to the driver on the right.

3:16Situation 4

You're turning left at an intersection, and a car is coming toward you, going straight. You are turning left at an intersection. Whom must you yield to? The answer is A: Oncoming vehicles going straight ahead. Drivers turning left must yield to oncoming vehicles going straight ahead. Left turners wait. Let oncoming traffic going straight pass first, then turn.

4:13Situation 5

You're stopped at a two-way stop, waiting to cross a street where traffic moves at about 30 miles per hour. About how big a gap do you need to cross a 30 mph street from a two-way stop? The answer is C: About six seconds in both directions. You need about a six-second gap in both directions to cross a 30 mph street, or about a block of clear space each way. Look for about a six-second gap in both directions, roughly a block of clear space each way.

5:15Recap

Once the lead vehicle has cleared an intersection, the rest of the procession may proceed and other traffic must yield. If you are the driver entering the highway, you must yield to the exiting driver. The first vehicle to reach the intersection goes first. Drivers turning left must yield to oncoming vehicles going straight ahead. You need about a six-second gap in both directions to cross a 30 mph street, or about a block of clear space each way.
