Intro
Signs, signals and road markings talk to you in shapes and colors. Let's decode five of them from the Florida Driver License Handbook. For each one, pick your answer before I reveal it.
Situation 1
You're approaching an intersection at a steady speed, and the green light ahead suddenly turns yellow. What should you do when the light turns yellow as you approach? The answer is B: Stop if you can safely do so. A yellow light warns the light is changing to red. Stop if you can safely do so. Yellow means the light is about to turn red. If you can stop safely, stop. Don't speed up to beat it, and don't slam on the brakes with someone close behind.
Situation 2
Road work ahead. A barricade with diagonal orange and white stripes sits by your lane. Which way do the stripes on construction barricades slope? The answer is C: Downward in the direction traffic must travel. Stripes on barricades and panels slope downward in the direction traffic must travel. Read the stripes like arrows: they slope down toward the side traffic should pass on.
Situation 3
It's a weekend afternoon, and you drive past a five-sided SCHOOL sign. When should you watch for children near a SCHOOL sign? The answer is C: At all times. You are near a school. Watch for children at all times, not just during school hours. A school sign means children could be around at any time, not just during school hours. Slow down and keep your eyes moving.
Situation 4
You're moving into a right turn lane, and a cyclist is riding straight through that same lane toward the intersection. You move into a right turn lane and a cyclist is going straight through it. What must you do? The answer is A: Yield to the cyclist. When entering a right turn lane you may meet cyclists going straight; you must yield to them. The cyclist is going straight, and you're the one turning across their path. Slow down, let them through, then make your turn.
Situation 5
You're cruising on a divided highway with a median between you and oncoming traffic. A yellow sign announces that the divided highway ends. A DIVIDED HIGHWAY ENDS sign tells you two-way traffic begins about how far ahead? The answer is C: 350 to 500 feet. The divided highway ends 350 to 500 feet ahead; you will then be on a two-way road. Keep right. From that sign, you have about 350 to 500 feet before oncoming traffic shares the road with you. Keep right.
Recap
