Masonry Fireplaces

~12 min read · Inspect firebox, damper, hearth extension dimensions and clearances to combustibles.

The open masonry fireplace is a controlled indoor fire, and its inspection walks the fire's perimeter: firebox integrity, damper function, hearth extension dimensions (20/12 for big openings, 16/8 for small), and the clearance ring that keeps mantels from becoming kindling.

Firebox and damper

The firebox: firebrick laid in refractory mortar — findings are cracked/missing brick, eroded joints (probe gently; gaps admit flame to the surrounding structure), and rust-through of steel fireboxes in heat-circulating units. The damper: operates fully, seats reasonably (energy), frame not rusted through — and the gas-log caveat: fireplaces with gas logs need the damper blocked open/clamped per the appliance's rules (a closed damper over gas logs is a CO event). The lintel rusting and sagging over the opening is structural to the assembly.

Hearth extension math

The stable dimensions: fireplace opening 6 sq ft or larger → hearth extends 20 inches in front and 12 inches beyond each side; under 6 sq ft → 16 and 8. The extension is noncombustible, properly supported (not just tile over plywood — look underneath from the basement where possible), and uncracked. Ember screens/doors and their condition ride along.

Combustible clearances

The clearance ring: no combustible mantel or trim within 6 inches of the opening; within 12 inches, projecting trim is limited (max 1/8 inch of projection per inch of distance from the opening — a 10-inch-away mantel shelf may project 1¼ inches); side trim respects the same geometry, and framing behind the masonry keeps its own required air gaps (visible sometimes from attic/basement). Scorched mantels are the ring violated and announcing it.

Worked example

A living-room fireplace: opening measures 36 × 30 inches; the tile hearth extends 16 inches in front; a chunky wood mantel shelf sits 9 inches above the opening, projecting 3 inches, its underside browned; and the damper is shut tight above a set of installed gas logs. Run the numbers and the report.

Opening area: 36 × 30 = 1,080 sq in = 7.5 sq ft — the large-opening rules apply: hearth must reach 20 inches (16 is short — extension finding, noncombustible rebuild) with 12-inch sides (measure). The mantel: at 9 inches distance the projection allowance is 9 × 1/8 = 1⅛ inches; the 3-inch shelf triples it, and the browned underside is pyrolysis in progress — the wood is charring toward its ignition point season by season; clearance correction finding with the scorch cited. The damper: closed over gas logs is the CO setup — clamp open per the log set's requirement, and note venting/CO alarm cross-references. Geometry, arithmetic, and one visible burn — the masonry fireplace section in a single hearth.

Common exam pitfalls

Eyeballing hearth extensions.

Measure the opening area first — 6 sq ft flips the requirement between 16/8 and 20/12.

Admiring a close-set wooden mantel.

Run the 6-inch ban and the 1/8-per-inch projection rule — browning undersides are pre-ignition evidence.

Leaving gas-log dampers operable.

Installed gas logs require the damper fixed open — a well-meaning 'energy-saver' closure is a CO mechanism.

Twenty-and-twelve for the big mouth, sixteen-and-eight for the small; six inches of respect around the fire, and gas logs never close the throat.
