In short

The SAFE MLO test has 120 questions, of which 115 are scored and 5 are unmarked pretest items you cannot identify. You have 190 minutes, about 95 seconds a question. The pass mark is a scaled score of 75, not 75 percent correct, and a wrong answer and a blank both score zero, so answer every question.

  • 115 of the 120 questions count; treat every one as if it does.
  • 75 is a scaled score, not a percentage. Never leave a blank.
  • Loan origination (27%) and ethics (18%) are nearly half the test.
  • Fail and you wait 30 days to retake; after three fails in a row, 180 days.

The test

120 questions, 190 minutes, and a 30-day wait if it goes wrong. Here is how the SAFE MLO test is built, so none of it surprises you.

The paper

You see 120 questions. Only 115 are scored. The other five are trial questions, mixed in and impossible to spot. So treat every question as if it counts. You get 190 minutes. That is about 95 seconds a question. Plenty, as long as you do not get stuck.

The score

Now the score. You need 75 to pass. But that 75 is a scaled score, not 75 percent correct. The scale evens out small differences between versions of the test. A wrong answer and a blank answer both earn nothing, so never leave a blank.

The marks

Pause. Which part of the test carries the most marks? Loan origination, at 27 percent. Federal law is next at 24, then general mortgage knowledge at 20. Ethics is 18 percent, and uniform state content is 11. Federal law gets the attention, but origination and ethics together are nearly half the test.

Test day

On test day, answer what you know first, and flag the rest for later. Read the last line of a question before the story above it. Words like except and not turn the answer around. If it goes wrong, you can sit the test again after 30 days. Fail three times in a row, and the wait becomes 180 days.

Recap

So: 115 that count, 75 scaled, and an answer for every question. Next: every TRID deadline on one calendar. Subscribe so you catch it.
