What this question is testing

The item tests familiarity with the administrative half of the fixtures chapter, which candidates skip while studying counts and clearances, and the ability to separate plumbing code signage from building code egress signage and accessibility signage.

On the job

This is a punch-list item on almost every commercial job. The general contractor buys signs late, hangs them on the door face instead of on the wall next to the latch side, and the inspector writes it up. It matters most in buildings where the public restrooms are shared between tenants, because without designation the tenants tend to lock them and the required facilities effectively stop existing.

Signage questions in the plumbing code almost always resolve to legible, readily visible, near the entrance. Learn that phrase pattern.

    One and a half gallons per minute is a widely marketed voluntary efficiency value. It is not the code maximum for this fixture, and a question that offers it is testing whether the candidate reads the table or the packaging.

    Two and a half gallons per minute at 80 psi is the shower head maximum. Notice that both the flow and the test pressure belong to a different fixture.

Why C is correct

The maximum flow rate table in the water supply chapter lists public lavatory faucets other than metering faucets at one half gallon per minute at 60 psi. Metering faucets are governed instead by a maximum volume per metering cycle, which is why the question specifies a non-metering faucet.

What this question is testing

The item tests whether the candidate can navigate the maximum flow rate table by fixture type and reference pressure, and can distinguish public from private lavatory limits and metering from non-metering faucets.

On the job

This is a submittal review item more than a field item, but it lands in the plumber's lap because the fixture arrives, gets installed, and then fails a flow check or a green building verification. Aerators are the fix, and they are also the loophole owners use to defeat the rule, swapping in a high-flow aerator after the inspection. On restaurant and school work, expect the reviewer to check the faucet model number against this table line by line.

Memory technique

Public hands get half a gallon.

Exam tip

Every flow limit in the table comes with a test pressure. If the pressure in the option does not match the fixture, the flow is from a different row.

Where to look it up

Chapter 6, the maximum flow rates and consumption table. Several states, California most notably, adopt stricter flow limits by amendment, and UPC jurisdictions publish their own table, so verify against your adopted code.

3. A bathtub filler is being installed in a hotel guest bathroom served by a system stored above 140 degrees F. What does the IPC require of the bathtub fill valve?

  • AIt must be set so that the water leaving the fill spout never exceeds 110 degrees F, the tempered water limit

    One hundred ten degrees is a genuine code ceiling, for tempered water at public hand-washing facilities and at a bidet. Applying it to a tub filler swaps one fixture's limit for another fixture's limit.

  • BNo temperature limiting is required at a tub filler, because the bather tests the water at the spout and adjusts it before ever getting into the tub

    User judgment is not a code-recognized safeguard. Tub scald injuries disproportionately involve children and older adults who cannot test the water or climb out quickly, which is why the limit lives in the valve.

Why D is correct

What this question is testing

The item tests recall of the fixture-specific temperature limits and whether the candidate keeps the 120 degree bathing limit separate from the 110 degree tempered-water and bidet limits.

On the job

In hotels and assisted living you will store water hot and temper it down, either at a master mixing valve on the distribution or at each fixture. Field crews get caught when they install a code-compliant tub valve and then set the master valve above the tub limit, or when they replace a scald-limiting cartridge with a standard one during a service call. Note the setpoint on the valve and leave the cartridge that came listed with it.

One twenty for the tub, one ten for the hands.

Exam tip

Bathing fixtures cap at 120. Hand washing and bidets sit at 110. Match the number to the body part.

Chapter 4, Section 424, the bathtub and whirlpool valve paragraph. UPC sets its own maximums for tub and shower valves and states them differently, so verify against your adopted code.

4. One building contains a restaurant on the ground floor and office suites on the floors above, each with its own occupant load. How does the plumbing code determine the number of fixtures required for that building?

  • AThe occupant loads are added together and the ratio for the predominant occupancy is applied to the total

    Choosing a predominant occupancy discards the ratio that applies to the other use, and the restaurant is usually the one that suffers.

  • BThe higher of the two ratios in the table is applied to the combined occupant load of the whole building

    Applying the strictest ratio to everyone overbuilds the low-demand portion substantially and is not what the table directs.

Whether the candidate can apply the minimum facilities table across a mixed occupancy building rather than collapsing it to a single ratio.

On the job

Mixed-use buildings are the normal case in downtown work, and the fixture count drives how much core space the restrooms consume on every floor. Doing the arithmetic by occupancy also tells you where the fixtures have to be located, since facilities generally have to serve the occupancy they were counted for rather than being pooled at one end of the building. Get this settled before the core is laid out.

Count each use on its own ticket, then add the tickets.

Exam tip

Separate the uses, run the table once for each, then add. Never average occupancies together.

5. A bathtub is specified with a deck-mounted filler whose spout outlet sits below the flood level rim of the tub, so a full tub covers the outlet. What does the plumbing code require for that installation?

  • ANothing further, because the tub's overflow prevents the water level from reaching the spout outlet

    An overflow is a partial safeguard against flooding a bathroom, not against back-siphonage. It also clogs, which is exactly when the level rises past the spout.

  • Backflow protection for that submerged inlet, since a spout below the flood level rim is a cross connection
  • CA check valve on the hot and cold supplies to the filler, installed in an accessible location under the deck

    Ordinary check valves are not recognized backflow protection for a submerged inlet, and burying them under a tub deck adds an inaccessible failure point.

    Overflow capacity is a drainage question. Enlarging it does nothing about water being pulled back into the supply piping.

Why B is correct

What this question is testing

Whether the candidate can recognize a submerged inlet as a cross connection and knows that an overflow and an ordinary check valve are not substitutes for backflow protection.

On the job

Deck-mounted and floor-mounted fillers with low spouts are common on high-end tubs, and the compliant products carry integral backflow protection that shows up on the submittal as a listing number. When one arrives without it, the fix is a listed vacuum breaker in the supply at the required height, which is awkward under a finished deck, so catch it at submittal review. The same reasoning covers hand showers on hoses that can reach the bottom of a full tub.

Memory technique

If the spout can go under, the supply needs protection.

Exam tip

Any outlet that can end up under water is a cross connection. Look for the answer that adds backflow protection at the fitting.
