In Massachusetts, how is proof of motor vehicle financial responsibility primarily verified for purposes of registering a vehicle with the Registry of Motor Vehicles?
ABy filing a paper SR-22 with the RMV at every renewal, a form Massachusetts does not use for compulsory policy verification
By electronic verification of an active compulsory policy through the RMV's insurer interface
CBy the insured posting a $20,000 cash bond with the State Treasurer, which is not the primary Massachusetts verification method
DBy annual notarized affidavit from the insured, which is not a recognized Massachusetts verification method
Why this is the answer
Massachusetts does not use an SR-22 filing to register a vehicle. Under c. 90 §1A, the Registry may register a vehicle only if the application is accompanied by a certificate, defined in c. 90 §34A as the insurer's certification that it has insured or will insure the vehicle under a compulsory policy or binder. The insurer or its agent supplies that certification to the Registry when the vehicle is registered, and the Registry may revoke a registration if the coverage is not maintained.
