Frequently Asked Questions

Is Personal Lines easier than full P&C?

Yes — Personal Lines covers only individual policies (auto, homeowners, dwelling, condo, inland marine for personal property). It cuts out the commercial property, BOP, workers comp, and commercial liability content, so the exam is typically 75 questions and 90 minutes vs. 100 questions and 120 minutes for full P&C.

Should I get Personal Lines or full P&C?

If you only plan to sell to individuals (auto, home, renters) Personal Lines is faster and cheaper. If you plan to sell commercial coverage, BOPs, or work with small businesses, take the full P&C exam — it’s the same license fee but unlocks far more product types.

What states offer a separate Personal Lines license?

Most states do (Florida, Texas, New York, California, Illinois, Ohio, Georgia, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Arizona all do). A handful only issue a combined P&C license. Your state page will say which option applies.

How long does it take to study for Personal Lines?

Plan for 30–50 hours over 2–4 weeks. The content is more contained than full P&C, but the dwelling and homeowners coverage forms (HO-3, DP-3, ISO endorsements) still need careful study.

Can I upgrade Personal Lines to full P&C later?

Yes — most states let you sit the full P&C exam at any time without retaking Personal Lines. You’ll pay the new license fee and pass the additional sections. Some agents start with Personal Lines for the faster path to selling, then upgrade after their first year.
