An Illinois auto policy lists three vehicles, each with UIM limits of $100,000/$300,000. The insured is injured by an underinsured driver. Under properly drafted anti-stacking language permitted by 215 ILCS 5/143a-2(4), the maximum UIM available is:

$100,000 per person from a single vehicle's coverage
B$300,000 per person (three vehicles stacked)
C$200,000 per person (two vehicles stacked)
DUnlimited, because stacking is mandatory in Illinois

Why this is the answer

Section 143a-2(4) explicitly permits insurers to include anti-stacking language that limits UM/UIM recovery to the highest single-vehicle limit on the policy, regardless of how many vehicles are insured. With clear policy wording, stacking across the three vehicles on the same policy is barred, so the insured can recover at most $100,000 per person of UIM. Without proper language, courts may allow stacking.
