A $200,000 whole life policy includes an Accidental Death and Dismemberment rider with a double indemnity provision. The insured dies in an automobile accident. How much will the beneficiary receive?

A$100,000 — only the AD&D rider pays because death was accidental
$400,000 — double indemnity pays twice the face amount for accidental death
C$200,000 — the base policy face amount only, because the accident exclusion applies
D$200,000 plus the return-of-premium rider value

Why this is the answer

An Accidental Death and Dismemberment rider with a double indemnity provision pays an additional benefit equal to the base face amount when the insured dies accidentally. The base whole life policy pays $200,000 regardless of cause of death; because the automobile accident qualifies as an accidental death, the AD&D rider adds another $200,000, for a total of $400,000. Option A is wrong—both benefits pay. Option C is wrong—there is no accident exclusion in a base life policy (exclusions for accidents are product-specific; the standard whole life does not exclude accidental death). Option D introduces a return-of-premium rider that was not part of the original policy terms. The TX outline §II.A lists AD&D as a testable rider category.
