A sump pump exists to remove water that has reached the foundation drainage system, and where it puts that water determines whether the job is finished. Discharging two feet from the wall places the water directly over the backfill zone — the disturbed, more permeable soil that was replaced against the foundation after construction. That soil is the fastest path back down to the footing drain, so the water re-enters the system, returns to the pit, and is pumped out again. The pump short-cycles, which wastes energy and shortens its life, but the more serious consequence is that the foundation is kept continuously wet by water the system was supposed to remove. The remedy is extending the discharge well away from the building, or tying it into a drain that carries it off site.
