Every load in a building follows a continuous path from where it is applied down to the soil, and a basement column is a link in that chain. Removing it does not delete the load — it forces the beam to carry the same load over a longer span, and bending moment in a beam grows with the square of the span, so a modest increase in unsupported length produces a large increase in stress. The column's footing was also sized for a point load that now has to be redistributed. None of this is something a visual inspection can size or clear: the inspector can see that a link is missing but cannot calculate whether the remaining beam is adequate. Reporting an interrupted load path and referring it to a structural engineer is both the correct call and the limit of the inspector's scope.
