Intro

Signs, signals and road markings talk to you in shapes and colors. Let's decode five of them from the Digest of Ohio Motor Vehicle Laws. For each one, pick your answer before I reveal it.

Situation 1

You enter a school zone where a sign posts a lower speed limit during certain hours. A regulatory school zone sign shows a speed limit for restricted hours. What must you do? The answer is B: Observe the posted limit during the restricted hours. Observe the posted speed limit in the school zone during restricted hours. During the restricted hours, slow to the posted school zone limit and watch for children.

Situation 2

You're in the far left lane of a one-way street, stopped at a red light. The cross street is one-way too, heading left. When may you turn left on a red light in Ohio? The answer is C: From the extreme left lane of a one-way street onto another one-way street. You may turn left on red only from the extreme left lane of a one-way street onto another one-way street, unless a sign forbids it. In Ohio, that's the only left on red allowed: from the far left lane of a one-way street onto another one-way street, unless a sign forbids it.

Situation 3

A yellow diamond sign with a big T shape on it appears beside the road. A yellow diamond sign shows a T shape. What does it tell you? The answer is A: The road ends at an intersection; turn left or right. The T-shaped warning sign means an intersection ahead where you must turn left or right. The road you're on ends ahead at an intersection. Get ready to turn left or right.

Situation 4

A yellow diamond sign shows two arrows pointing at each other, one above and one below. A yellow diamond sign shows arrows pointing at each other above and below a height. What does it warn of? The answer is C: Limited overhead clearance ahead. This sign warns of limited clearance ahead—important for tall vehicles. That's a low-clearance warning. It matters most if you're driving something tall, like a moving truck or an RV.

Situation 5

You're on a wide road and notice white lines between some lanes and yellow lines between others. What do white lines separate? The answer is B: Traffic going the same direction. White lines separate traffic traveling in the same direction; yellow lines separate opposite directions. White lines separate traffic going the same direction. Yellow lines separate traffic going opposite ways.

Recap

Observe the posted speed limit in the school zone during restricted hours. You may turn left on red only from the extreme left lane of a one-way street onto another one-way street, unless a sign forbids it. The T-shaped warning sign means an intersection ahead where you must turn left or right. This sign warns of limited clearance ahead—important for tall vehicles. White lines separate traffic traveling in the same direction; yellow lines separate opposite directions. Nice work.
