LAANC & Airspace Authorization

LAANC turned controlled-airspace access from a 90-day paperwork exercise into a 30-second app tap — but only if you understand what the grid numbers mean and when LAANC cannot help you.
What LAANC is
The Low Altitude Authorization and Notification Capability is a data exchange between the FAA and approved private providers (apps like Aloft, AutoPylot, Airspace Link). It grants near-real-time authorizations under 107.41 for flights in Class B, C, D, and surface-E airspace at participating airports, referencing pre-approved altitude ceilings published in UAS Facility Maps (UASFM).

Reading the UASFM grid
Facility maps divide controlled airspace into one-minute latitude/longitude grid squares, each labeled with the maximum altitude (in feet AGL) that ATC has pre-approved for automatic authorization — 100, 200, 300, 400, or 0. A '0' grid means no automatic authorization: near the runway ends and final approach paths, every flight needs a further-coordination request (manual ATC review, submitted up to 90 days ahead) or must not fly.

When LAANC is not the tool
LAANC handles airspace authorization only. It does not waive any Part 107 rule (BVLOS, over people, 55 lbs), does not cover airports without LAANC participation (use DroneZone there), does not authorize flight in Prohibited/Restricted areas or TFRs, and a LAANC authorization is not permission to interfere with airport traffic — you must still comply with any provisions attached, and ATC can direct termination.
Worked example
A cell-tower inspection at 350 ft AGL sits in a Class D grid marked '200'. The adjacent grid, 300 m west and outside Class D, is uncontrolled. What are your options?
The grid ceiling is 200 ft AGL — LAANC will instantly approve only up to 200. Option 1: request further coordination through your LAANC provider for 350 ft in that grid and wait for manual ATC review (up to 90 days). Option 2: reduce the mission to 200 ft if the tower height allows. Option 3: reposition — the structure exception cannot raise a LAANC ceiling, so if the tower itself is in the 200 grid, flying 350 ft 'because the tower is tall' is still a violation. The grid number caps you regardless of the 400-above-structure rule.
Common exam pitfalls
Stacking the 400-ft-above-structure exception on top of a grid ceiling.
In controlled airspace, your LAANC authorization altitude is the hard cap. The structure exception governs 107.51, not your authorization.
Treating a zero grid as a hard prohibition.
A 0 grid means no AUTOMATIC approval — further coordination through the provider can still yield a manually reviewed authorization.
Thinking LAANC waives operational rules.
LAANC is 107.41 airspace access only. BVLOS, over-people, and altitude-limit relief come from waivers, not LAANC.
