6 Steps to Get Your MLO License in Idaho
Follow these steps to become a licensed Mortgage Loan Originator in Idaho. The process typically takes 4-8 weeks from start to finish.
Step 1: Complete Pre-Licensing Education
Complete 20 hours of NMLS-approved pre-licensing education. The SAFE Act minimum is 20 hours covering federal law (3 hrs), ethics (3 hrs), non-traditional lending (2 hrs), and electives (12 hrs).
Step 2: Register on NMLS
Create an account on the Nationwide Multistate Licensing System (NMLS). Complete your individual form (MU4), provide personal information, and authorize background checks.
Step 3: Pass the SAFE MLO Exam
Pass the SAFE MLO Test with a score of 75% or higher. The exam has 125 questions (100 national + 25 UST state component) and you have 190 minutes to complete it.
Step 4: Complete Background Checks
Submit fingerprints for an FBI criminal background check and authorize a credit report through NMLS. Any felony conviction in the past 7 years or financial crime at any time will disqualify you.
Step 5: Obtain Surety Bond
Obtain a surety bond of $25,000 as required by Idaho. The bond protects consumers against potential losses from MLO misconduct. Annual bond premiums typically cost 1-15% of the bond amount based on your credit score.
Step 6: Submit License Application
Submit your license application through NMLS to the Idaho Department of Finance (IDOF). Pay the required fees, and your application will be reviewed. Processing typically takes 2-6 weeks.
