    Surge protection guards equipment against transient overvoltage. It offers no protection to a person in contact with a faulted pump.

Why B is correct

What this question is testing

This checks whether you know that ground-fault protection at a pool attaches to the outlet rather than to the receptacle, so hard-wired equipment is covered right along with cord and plug connected equipment. It is a persistent field misconception that direct connection avoids the requirement, and the exam uses the pump motor to test exactly that assumption.

On the job

The classic service call is a pool pump that trips after a heavy rain, or an older pool where a tech installs a replacement motor on an unprotected circuit because that is how he found it. Replacing the motor is exactly the moment the protection has to be brought up to current requirements. Tripping is usually a genuine problem rather than nuisance: moisture in the motor, a damaged whip, or a failing start capacitor, and it is worth chasing rather than defeating.

Water plus motor equals GFCI, plug or no plug.

Exam tip

At a pool, assume ground-fault protection is required and look for the exception rather than the other way around.

    Keeping an inverter from energizing a de-energized utility line is anti-islanding, a function built into every listed interactive inverter. It protects line crews, but it is a separate requirement from rapid shutdown.

    Protecting modules and array wiring from lightning transients is handled with surge protective devices and proper bonding of the racking. Rapid shutdown does nothing about surge energy.

Why D is correct

What this question is testing

This checks whether you understand what makes photovoltaic work different from every other system you wire, namely that the source cannot be switched off. It also separates rapid shutdown from anti-islanding, which candidates routinely confuse because both involve an inverter shutting down.

On the job

In the field rapid shutdown usually means module level electronics, either optimizers or microinverters, plus an initiation device at a readily accessible outdoor location with clear labeling a responder can find from the street. Commissioning includes actually operating the device and confirming the voltage drops. Labeling is one of the most commonly corrected items on a solar inspection, and on repairs a replacement module or shutdown device that is not part of the listed combination can quietly break the function.

Memory technique

Rapid shutdown is for the person with the axe, not for the grid.

Exam tip

Tie rapid shutdown to firefighters on the roof; if an answer is about the utility, it is describing something else.

    This applies only the first 125 percent factor and stops. The conductor sizing step is a second, separate multiplication that this answer omits.

  • C10 amperes

    This uses the rated short-circuit current with no factors at all, which ignores both the sustained output of an array in bright cold conditions and the continuous duty allowance.

  • D19.5 amperes

    This applies the 125 percent factor three times. Only two multiplications are called for, one to establish maximum circuit current and one to size the conductor.

Why A is correct

The calculation stacks two separate 125 percent factors. The first converts rated short-circuit current into maximum circuit current, and the second sizes the conductor for continuous duty. Ten amperes becomes 12.5 amperes and then 15.6 amperes of required ampacity, all before temperature correction and conductor adjustment.

What this question is testing

This tests whether you apply both required factors, in the right order, and whether you know that the result is a pre-correction value rather than a final conductor selection.

On the job

On a real rooftop the correction that follows this calculation dominates. Conductors in conduit on a hot roof see ambient temperatures well above the table basis, and the correction factor can cut usable ampacity by a third or more, which is why photovoltaic feeders are routinely a size or two larger than the naive arithmetic suggests. Installers who size from the 15.6 ampere figure alone find their conductors undersized once the roof temperature adder is applied, and the correction is checked on every plan review.

One twenty-five for the sun, one twenty-five for continuous.

Exam tip

Photovoltaic circuits multiply by 125 percent twice for different reasons. Write both steps out so you do not stop after the first.

    Redundant grounding is required for patient care spaces generally, but it is not the answer to the wetness hazard. A wet procedure designation adds a further requirement on top of it.

Tests whether you know the two permitted forms of protection for a wet procedure location and the condition that forces the choice, and whether you can separate that requirement from the redundant grounding rule that applies to patient care spaces generally.

On the job

Whether a room is designated wet drives thousands of dollars of equipment, so the decision is documented in the project design and the electrician builds to it. Operating rooms, some procedure rooms and certain therapy areas are the usual candidates. Standard patient rooms and corridors are not. The line isolation monitor panel in a surgery suite is the visible sign that an isolated power system was chosen, and its alarm means a first fault has occurred while everything keeps running.

Where the power must not stop, isolate it instead of tripping it.

Wet procedure location: interrupt the circuit, or isolate it. Where interruption is intolerable, isolate.

Receptacles rated 30 amperes and above must also be of the locking and grounding type.

What this question is testing

Tests whether you know that a shore power receptacle gets a dedicated branch circuit whose rating matches it rather than sharing a general-purpose circuit, and whether you can separate that requirement from the locking-configuration requirement that applies to the larger sizes.

On the job

Dock wiring lives in salt spray, sunlight and constant mechanical abuse from cords being dragged and yanked. One circuit per receptacle also makes the marina operable: a boat with a fault does not take its neighbors down, and the dockmaster can isolate one slip. Corrosion at pedestal terminations is the leading maintenance issue, and it is also the leading source of the leakage current that makes electric shock drowning possible.

Every slip gets its own circuit, because every boat is its own building.
