On a new Illinois private passenger auto policy, uninsured motorist (UM) coverage at statutory minimum limits is:
Mandatory and cannot be rejected
BOptional and may be declined orally at binding
CRequired only when the insured selects MedPay
DRequired only for vehicles financed through a lender
Why this is the answer
Illinois requires every private passenger auto liability policy to include uninsured motorist (UM) coverage at the statutory minimum of $25,000/$50,000 bodily injury. Unlike UIM, the insured cannot reject this base UM layer. UM coverage above the statutory minimum, and any UIM coverage matching higher BI limits, can be selected lower or rejected in writing. Producers must ensure the declarations show UM at no less than 25/50 to satisfy 215 ILCS 5/143a.
