How does Michigan personal auto property damage liability (PDL) coverage relate to mini-tort claims under MCL 500.3135?
APDL is the same coverage as mini-tort
BPDL replaces mini-tort once limits exceed $25,000, since the higher PDL limits automatically absorb the mini-tort vehicle damage claim under Michigan no-fault law
CMini-tort only applies if PDL has been waived
PDL pays for damage to other people's non-vehicle property (fences, buildings); mini-tort separately covers up to $3,000 of damage to another driver's vehicle
Why this is the answer
Michigan no-fault abolishes most tort liability for vehicle damage but preserves PDL for damage to non-vehicle property (Property Protection Insurance under MCL 500.3121) and the mini-tort carve-out for vehicle damage up to $3,000. Producers must explain both coverages because they protect different exposures.
