A Michigan personal lines client needs a coastal high-value homeowners policy that the admitted market refuses to write. Which license is required for the producer to place the risk with a non-admitted insurer?
AA Property qualification on the standard P&C producer license alone
BA public adjuster license under MCL 500.1224
CA Variable Contracts qualification
A surplus lines license issued under MCL 500.1903
Why this is the answer
Under MCL 500.1903, only a Michigan-licensed surplus lines producer may procure insurance from a non-admitted (unauthorized) insurer for a Michigan risk. The standard P&C producer license alone does not authorize placement with non-admitted carriers. A surplus lines licensee must document the admitted market diligent-search effort, collect and remit the surplus lines tax under MCL 500.1910, and report transactions to the Surplus Lines Association of Michigan.
