Refractory panels line the firebox of a factory-built fireplace and their job is thermal: they absorb and reflect the fire's heat while shielding the metal firebox shell behind them from direct flame contact and extreme temperature. When a panel cracks through or is missing, heat reaches the metal directly, and the metal was never intended to take it — it can distort, degrade and eventually fail, which puts fire and combustion products closer to the framing the unit's clearances were designed around. Manufacturers publish criteria for when panels must be replaced, often based on crack width, and replacement panels are model-specific. The inspector reports cracked or missing panels as a safety condition and recommends the fireplace not be used until a qualified technician evaluates and replaces them.
