A downspout concentrates the runoff from a large roof area into a single point, and discharging it beside the foundation puts that entire volume into the backfill zone. An inch of rain on a modest roof section is hundreds of gallons, delivered to a few square feet of ground directly against the wall. The backfill is disturbed and more permeable than the surrounding soil, so the water travels straight down to the footing, producing hydrostatic pressure and saturating the soil that supports it. Repeated saturation and drying can also contribute to settlement. The remedy is cheap and effective — extensions, splash blocks carrying water beyond the backfill, or a buried line to a suitable discharge point — which is why this is one of the highest-value findings in a report on a house with basement moisture.
