Buildings do not weather evenly, and knowing which elevation faces the weather tells an inspector where to look hardest. The elevation exposed to prevailing wind-driven rain takes more water, so its cladding, caulking, window perimeters and paint fail sooner. South and west exposures take the most ultraviolet and the largest daily temperature swing, so finishes chalk, sealants harden and shingles age faster there. North-facing surfaces stay damp longest and grow moss and algae. The practical use is comparative: when one elevation is markedly worse than the others, exposure often explains it, and when the sheltered elevation shows damage the exposed one does not, something other than weather is at work — which is a more interesting finding. Exposure also explains why a roof may need replacing on one slope before another.
