Worked questions

1. A refrigerator's compressor is being replaced under the manufacturer's warranty by an authorized service company rather than by an independent shop. What does that arrangement change about the certification requirement?

  • AThe warranty covers the certification requirement for anyone the manufacturer authorizes

Manufacturer authorisation is a business relationship. It carries no authority to permit refrigerant work and does not stand in for an individual's certification.

  • Nothing, because whoever opens the sealed circuit has to hold Type I certification
  • CThe requirement shifts to the manufacturer, who stands behind the sealed system

Responsibility for compliance rests with the person opening the circuit and their employer, and it is not transferred to whoever manufactured the appliance.

  • DThe requirement is waived while the appliance remains within its warranty period

Nothing in the program has a time limit tied to a warranty. The requirement applies from the day the appliance is built until the day it is disposed of.

Why B is correct

The certification requirement follows the individual performing the work, and it is triggered by opening a circuit containing a covered refrigerant. Warranty coverage, factory authorisation and the age of the appliance are all outside the rule. An authorized servicer's technician needs exactly the same Type I certification an independent technician would need for the identical repair.

What this question is testing

This item tests whether you attach the certification requirement to the individual and to the act of opening a circuit, rather than to a company, a contract or the condition of the appliance. Warranty framing is a common way to make the requirement seem negotiable.

On the job

Factory authorized service networks handle a large share of sealed system warranty work on refrigerators, and the manufacturers require their servicers to carry certification precisely because the obligation is personal. New technicians in those networks sometimes assume the manufacturer's authorisation covers them, which it does not. The same reasoning answers a related question that comes up on job sites: an uncertified helper may carry parts and hold a light, but the person who breaks into the circuit and runs the recovery machine has to hold the card.

Memory technique

The card belongs to the hand holding the cutter.

Exam tip

Ask who is opening the refrigerant circuit. That person needs the certification, and no arrangement between companies changes it.

Where to look it up

Certification is required of any individual who opens an appliance containing a covered refrigerant, regardless of warranty or employer.

  • Which unit on a service list meets the EPA definition of a small appliance under Section 608?
  • What set of conditions must a piece of equipment satisfy to be classified as a small appliance?
  • A walk-in cooler uses a factory-charged 4 pound condensing unit joined to its evaporator by line sets brazed on site. What certification does opening that refrigerant circuit require?
  • A hotel's through-the-wall PTAC unit left the factory fully assembled, hermetically sealed, and charged with 3 pounds of R-410A. Which certification covers opening its refrigerant circuit?
  • A ductless mini-split arrived with the outdoor section holding a factory charge, but the installer brazed the line set to the indoor head on site. How is this system classified for certification purposes?
  • A packaged rooftop unit was assembled, charged, and hermetically sealed at the factory, but its nameplate lists a 12 pound charge of R-410A. What does that charge amount mean for its classification?
  • Holding only Type I certification, which service call may a technician legally take when the job requires opening a refrigerant circuit?
  • In the definition of a small appliance, what does the phrase hermetically sealed describe about the way the equipment is built?
  • One technician needs to service factory-sealed household units and also large field-piped rooftop systems. Which certification covers that entire range of work?
  • A technician clamps a bolt-on piercing valve onto the tubing of a factory-sealed refrigerator in order to recover its charge. What does adding that valve do to the unit's classification?
  • A house has a plug-in window air conditioner and a central split system whose line set was brazed during construction. What certification does opening the central system's refrigerant circuit require?
  • A technician certified under Section 608 is asked to service the air conditioning system in a customer's pickup truck. What credential does that particular job actually require?
  • Facing an unfamiliar packaged refrigeration unit on the bench, how should a technician decide whether the small appliance rules apply to it?
  • A household dehumidifier holds only 6 ounces of R-410A in its sealed circuit. What do the Section 608 rules require before that circuit is cut open for a repair?
  • An under-counter ice maker is one factory-sealed cabinet, while a modular ice machine head is joined to a remote condenser by field-run tubing. What certification does servicing the modular machine's circuit require?
  • An absorption refrigerator of the kind used in recreational vehicles has no compressor at all and works on a sealed ammonia and water charge driven by a gas flame. How do the small appliance recovery rules apply to it?
  • A used chest freezer is a plug-in cabinet whose refrigerant circuit was completed and sealed at the plant, and its data plate gives the charge as eighty-eight ounces. Where does that number place the unit for certification and recovery purposes?
  • A shop is asked to service the refrigeration side of a residential heat pump water heater. Its refrigerant circuit holds one pound and was completed and sealed at the plant, though a plumbing contractor installed the unit. Which certification covers opening that circuit?
  • The small appliance definition turns on a figure of five pounds or less. On a factory sealed unit, what exactly does that five pounds measure?
  • A technician holds Type II certification only and is asked to open the sealed circuit of a household refrigerator in order to replace its compressor. What does that certification allow on this job?
  • An imported factory sealed display cooler carries a data plate listing its refrigerant charge as 1.5 kilograms, and the technician needs to know which rules govern the unit. Where does that charge place it?
  • A delivery trailer carries a refrigeration unit mounted on its nose that keeps the cargo box cold, and that unit was piped together in the field and holds well over five pounds. Which rules and certification govern servicing it?
  • A countertop wine cabinet cools by means of a thermoelectric module and a small fan, and the cabinet contains no compressor, no refrigerant tubing and no charge of any kind. What do the Section 608 rules require here?
  • A soda fountain dispenser chills its syrup lines with a refrigeration deck that the factory assembled, charged with two pounds of refrigerant and sealed, and the store connected only water, syrup and power on site. How is that deck classified?
  • A manufacturer's catalogue lists a range of coolers as self-contained, and a helper takes that phrase to mean every one of them must be a small appliance. Why is that assumption unreliable?
  • A technician holds Section 609 certification earned for motor vehicle air conditioning work and is asked to recover the charge from a customer's household refrigerator. What does that credential permit on this job?
  • A contractor operates portable dehumidifiers that came factory sealed with twelve ounces each, and one large ducted dehumidification unit whose refrigerant piping was brazed together on site. Which of these may a Type I technician open?
  • A florist's walk-in room is cooled by a packaged refrigeration unit that hangs through the wall, arrived fully assembled and charged with four and a half pounds, and was mounted without its circuit ever being opened. How is it classified?
  • A new compact dormitory refrigerator carries a data plate reading R-600a with a charge of one and a half ounces, and the shop has only ever worked on fluorocarbon units. How does that cabinet get classified?
  • A factory sealed ice cream freezer holds two pounds of refrigerant, and because its evaporator runs far below zero the suction gauge sits slightly in a vacuum while the unit operates. Which certification governs opening its circuit?
  • A factory sealed cooler with a three pound charge on its data plate has leaked down and now holds only a few ounces. Which figure decides how the unit is classified and what has to happen before it is opened?
