A room air conditioner left the factory fully assembled, brazed shut, and charged with three pounds of R-410A. Which certification does a technician need before opening the sealed refrigerant circuit on that unit?

  • Type I, because the unit is a factory-charged hermetically sealed appliance holding five pounds or less
  • BType II, because R-410A is a high-pressure refrigerant and high-pressure work is Type II

    The refrigerant alone does not set the category. Nearly every small appliance holds a high-pressure refrigerant, and the factory-sealed, five-pound-or-less definition still keeps this unit in Type I.

  • CType III, because a unit holding a charge that small is handled under the low-pressure rules

    Type III covers low-pressure appliances, whose refrigerant boils above room temperature so the machine runs in a vacuum. Physical size is not part of the definition and R-410A is nowhere near low pressure.

Why A is correct

Three conditions define a small appliance: fully manufactured at the factory, charged at the factory, and hermetically sealed at the factory, with a charge of five pounds or less. A window air conditioner meets all three, so it sits squarely in the Type I category no matter what refrigerant the manufacturer put in it.

What this question is testing

This item checks whether the candidate can separate the appliance definition from the refrigerant property. Type II certification is defined by the appliance class, and the small appliance carve-out sits on top of the high-pressure class. Candidates who memorize only 'R-410A equals high pressure equals Type II' will miss it.

On the job

Property management accounts mix equipment constantly. A tech may pull a window shaker out of one apartment in the morning and open a five-ton split system in the afternoon. Knowing which card covers which machine matters when an inspector asks, and it matters for the shop's recovery equipment choices too: the window unit can be handled with system-dependent recovery gear, while the split system needs a self-contained recovery machine. Techs who assume the refrigerant decides the category end up buying the wrong machine or logging the wrong procedure.

Type I is 'sealed and small' - factory box, five pounds or less. The moment you have to braze field piping, you have left Type I behind.

Exam tip
