Intro
Signs, signals and road markings talk to you in shapes and colors. Let's decode five of them from the Illinois Rules of the Road. For each one, pick your answer before I reveal it.
Situation 1
You're stopped at a red light, hoping to turn right. Then you notice a sign: NO TURN ON RED. What does a NO TURN ON RED sign prohibit? The answer is C: A right turn on red, or a left turn on red between one-way streets. It prohibits a right turn on a red light, or a left turn on a red light at intersecting one-way streets. That sign takes away the right turn on red, and the left turn on red between one-way streets too. Wait for the green.
Situation 2
You're coming up to a stop sign with a thick white stop line painted across your lane. Where must your car stop at a white stop line? The answer is B: Before any part of it crosses the line. You must stop your vehicle before any part of it crosses the stop line. The line is usually 4 feet before the crosswalk in urban areas. Stop with every part of your car behind the line, not on it. In cities, the line is usually about four feet before the crosswalk.
Situation 3
A yellow NARROW BRIDGE sign warns you as you approach a small river crossing. According to the Illinois manual, a narrow bridge is generally how much narrower than the approach pavement? The answer is B: About 2 feet. A bridge width is generally 2 feet less than the width of the approach pavement. A narrow bridge is generally about two feet narrower than the road leading up to it. Slow down and keep to your side.
Situation 4
It's late at night, and the traffic light ahead is blinking red, on and off. What must you do at a flashing red light? The answer is B: Stop, yield, and proceed when safe. At a flashing red, you must stop, yield to traffic in the intersection or crosswalk, and proceed when safe. Treat a flashing red like a stop sign: stop, yield to anyone in the intersection or crosswalk, and go when it's safe.
Situation 5
You're approaching a railroad crossing marked only by a white X-shaped crossbuck sign. No gates, no lights. How should you treat a railroad crossbuck sign in Illinois? The answer is C: As a yield sign. The crossbuck is considered a yield sign: you must yield to any oncoming trains and railroad equipment. In Illinois, treat the crossbuck as a yield sign: slow down, look both ways, and give any train the right-of-way.
Recap
It prohibits a right turn on a red light, or a left turn on a red light at intersecting one-way streets. You must stop your vehicle before any part of it crosses the stop line. A bridge width is generally 2 feet less than the width of the approach pavement. At a flashing red, you must stop, yield to traffic in the intersection or crosswalk, and proceed when safe. The crossbuck is considered a yield sign: you must yield to any oncoming trains and railroad equipment. Nice work.
