Staying within the rated payload limit means the aircraft can carry the load, not that the load is free. A multirotor generates lift by spinning propellers, and additional mass requires additional thrust throughout the flight, which means higher motor current and faster battery depletion — so endurance falls even though nothing has been exceeded. The second effect is inertial and is the one pilots underestimate: a heavier aircraft carries more momentum at any given speed, so it takes longer and more distance to stop, and it responds more sluggishly to control inputs. That matters most in exactly the situations where margin is thin — close to a structure, near obstacles, or when an unexpected manoeuvre is needed to avoid traffic. Maximum speed is generally reduced rather than increased, and the flight controller compensates for the added mass by commanding more power, which is the mechanism producing the endurance loss rather than a way of avoiding it.
