Compared to a traditional variable life policy, a variable universal life (VUL) policy primarily adds which feature?
Why this is the answer
Variable universal life (VUL) layers two structural features over variable life (VL). Both share separate-account investment of cash value and SEC registration as securities, so neither of those distinguishes the products. The defining addition VUL brings is the universal-life flexibility: the owner can adjust premium amounts and the death benefit (subject to underwriting) over the policy's life. Traditional variable life, by contrast, carries fixed scheduled premiums and a contractually structured death benefit. VL also contains a guaranteed minimum death benefit so long as scheduled premiums are paid; VUL typically does not, because flexible premiums make such a guarantee impossible to price.
