EPA 608 exam practice question · Equipment & Sales Restrictions

Once a technician passes the Type I section of the Section 608 exam, how long does that certification remain valid?

  • AFive years, after which a refresher examination has to be passed

There is no five year cycle in Section 608 technician certification. That figure is borrowed from other trade credentials that do expire.

  • BTen years, matching the recertification cycle used for recovery equipment

Recovery equipment is certified by model rather than on a ten year cycle, and no such cycle applies to technicians either.

  • It does not expire, and no renewal examination is required
  • DUntil the technician changes employers, at which point it has to be reissued

The certification belongs to the technician and moves with them. A new employer may want a copy for the file, but the credential itself is not reissued.

Why C is correct

The credential is permanent. There is no renewal cycle in the rule, so a technician who passed years ago remains certified, and the certificate travels with the person from one employer to the next. Adding coverage for other equipment means passing more sections, not renewing what is already held.

What this question is testing

This item tests the durability of the certification, a fact that also appears in Core material but is applied here to the Type I credential. It checks that you reject invented renewal cycles. Answering correctly also means understanding that adding coverage for other equipment means passing another section, never renewing what has already been earned.

On the job

Technicians who have been out of the trade for a stretch often assume they have to test again and are relieved to learn otherwise. What they usually do need is a replacement card, which the certifying organization can issue from its records. Employers keep a copy in the personnel file, so a technician moving between shops should ask for one on the way out. Knowing the credential is permanent also means keeping the paperwork somewhere it will not be lost.

Memory technique

Pass once, keep forever. The only way to add to it is to pass another section, never to renew the old one.

Exam tip

Section 608 certification is for life. Any answer with a renewal period attached to it is a distractor.

Where to look it up

40 CFR 82.161 technician certification; the credential does not expire and requires no periodic renewal.
