A technician is told to pressurize a system with shop compressed air because it is quick and free. What makes ordinary compressed air an unacceptable substitute for dry nitrogen?

Why C is correct

Compressed air fails on two counts at once. It carries water and oil aerosol that contaminate the system and form acid, and its oxygen fraction can support ignition when combined with the oil already inside the tubing. Nitrogen avoids both problems because it is dry and chemically inert.

What this question is testing

The question checks whether a candidate can explain both failure modes of compressed air, contamination and oxygen content, rather than repeating the rule. It also tests the distinction between gases that must be recovered and gases that may simply be released after a test.

On the job

The damage from this one is delayed rather than immediate. The leak test looks fine, the system gets charged, and six months later the compressor fails with an acid burnout that the shop cannot explain. Moisture introduced during the test is a common hidden cause. This is also why the nitrogen used for this work is specified as dry nitrogen and why the bottle gets a regulator rather than being cracked open directly into the system.

Memory technique

Air is one fifth oxygen and full of water. You would not charge a system with either one on purpose.

Exam tip

Compressed air and pure oxygen are wrong for the same underlying reason plus one extra: air adds moisture on top of the oxygen hazard.

Where to look it up

Shop air contains water, oil, and about 21 percent oxygen. Use dry nitrogen with a regulator instead.
