Rebar Calculator β Spacing, Quantity & Weight
Calculate rebar bars, linear feet, weight, and standard 20-ft bars needed for concrete slabs and footings. Supports #3 through #8 rebar.
Formula: Bars per direction = (Dimension in inches / Spacing) + 1. Overlap = 40 x bar diameter.
How to Estimate Rebar for Concrete
Rebar (reinforcing bar) strengthens concrete by handling tensile loads that concrete alone cannot resist. Estimating rebar requires knowing the slab dimensions, bar size, and spacing.
For a typical two-way slab, rebar runs in both directions (each way, or E.W.), forming a grid. The number of bars in each direction equals the perpendicular dimension divided by the spacing, plus one. Total linear feet is the sum of all bar lengths in both directions.
Rebar Overlap (Lap Splice)
When a single bar is not long enough to span the entire slab, bars must be overlapped. The minimum lap splice per ACI 318 is typically 40 times the bar diameter. This means a #4 bar (0.5" dia) needs at least a 20" overlap. When ordering standard 20-foot bars, account for these overlaps to avoid running short.
