How to Get Your FL Contractor License

DBPR Application Process

The Florida Department of Business & Professional Regulation (DBPR) oversees contractor licensing through the Construction Industry Licensing Board (CILB). Your application must include proof of experience, a CPA financial statement, background check via electronic fingerprinting, proof of insurance, and the $249 application fee. Processing typically takes 4-8 weeks.

PSI Exam Format

The FL General Contractor exam is administered by PSI and consists of 3 parts: Business & Financial Management (120 questions, 6.5 hours), Contract Administration (60 questions, 4.5 hours), and Project Management (60 questions, 4.5 hours). The exam is open-book with up to 15 approved references. You need 70% on each part to pass.

Timeline: Prerequisites to Active License

Most candidates complete the entire process in 4-8 months. The timeline depends on how quickly you gather documentation (2-4 weeks), DBPR application processing (4-8 weeks), exam preparation and scheduling (4-12 weeks), and post-exam requirements (1-2 weeks). Start gathering your financial statement and experience documentation early, as these are often the most time-consuming prerequisites. After passing the exam, you must also obtain local business licenses and register with your county building department before pulling permits.
