Gravel Calculator — Tons & Cubic Yards

Estimate cubic yards, tons, and truck loads for gravel, sand, crushed stone, topsoil, and fill dirt. Includes delivery and compaction notes.

Formula: Cu Yd = (L x W x Depth in ft) / 27. Tons = Cu Yd x Material Weight / 2000.

How to Calculate Gravel and Fill Materials

Estimating gravel and fill requires two conversions: volume (cubic yards) and weight (tons). Suppliers may price by either unit, so knowing both is essential for accurate budgeting.

Start by calculating the volume: multiply length x width x depth (all in feet) to get cubic feet, then divide by 27 to convert to cubic yards. Next, multiply cubic yards by the material's weight per yard to get total weight. Gravel weighs approximately 2,800 lbs per cubic yard (1.4 tons), while topsoil is lighter at about 2,200 lbs (1.1 tons).

Ordering and Delivery Tips

Most suppliers deliver in standard dump trucks holding 10 cubic yards. When ordering, account for compaction — loose material settles 15-20% when compacted. Order 10-15% extra to achieve your target finished depth. For large projects, consider ordering by the truckload for better pricing.
