Construction Math on the FL Contractor Exam

The Florida General Contractor license exam is a 3-part, 240-question test administered by PSI. Math-heavy questions appear across all three parts but are especially concentrated in Business & Financial Management (Part 1, 120 questions) and Contract Administration (Part 2, 60 questions). Roughly one-third of Part 1 focuses on accounting, payroll tax calculation, and cost tracking.

The exam is open-book, meaning you can reference approved materials, but you still need to know how to apply formulas quickly. This calculator mirrors the six most common calculation types: concrete volume, block/brick estimating, employer payroll tax burden (FICA, FUTA, SUTA, Workers Comp), material cost with waste and markup, overhead allocation, and full bid assembly.

• Tab your reference books to payroll tax tables, concrete mix charts, and overhead formulas.
• Always convert units first (inches to feet, square inches to square feet).
• Double-check whether a question asks for employer-only taxes or total (employer + employee).
• Round only at the final step to avoid compounding rounding errors.
• Bid questions often chain multiple steps; write down each intermediate result.
