What to Bring to the Testing Center

Required: Two Forms of ID

Every PSI testing center requires two forms of identification. Your primary ID must be a government-issued photo ID:

• Valid driver's license
• U.S. passport or passport card
• State-issued ID card
• Military ID (with photo)

Your secondary ID must include your printed name and signature:

• Credit or debit card (signed)
• Social Security card
• Employee or student ID

Critical rule: The name on your IDs must exactly match the name on your exam registration. If your driver's license says "Katherine" but you registered as "Kate," you may be turned away. Check this the night before.

What You Cannot Bring

PSI testing centers enforce strict rules. Leave these items in your car or at home:

• Cell phones and smartwatches — not even powered off in your pocket
• Notes, textbooks, or study materials — nothing paper-based

• Food and drinks — water bottles are usually not allowed in the testing room

The PSI Check-In Process

Step 1: Sign In

You will approach the front desk and present your two forms of ID. The proctor will verify your name against the registration list.

Step 2: Biometric Capture

Most PSI centers will take your photograph and a digital palm vein scan or fingerprint. This biometric data is used to verify your identity if you leave the room for a break and return.

Step 3: Secure Your Belongings

You will be assigned a locker for your personal items. Empty your pockets completely — the proctor may ask you to turn your pockets inside out or perform a visual inspection.

Step 4: Receive Your Materials

The proctor will hand you scratch paper (or a dry-erase board) and escort you to your workstation.

Step 5: Tutorial

Before the actual exam starts, you will see a brief tutorial that explains how to navigate the exam software — how to flag questions, move forward and backward, and submit your exam. This tutorial time does NOT count against your exam time.

What the Exam Looks Like

The real estate licensing exam is computer-based. Here is what you will see on screen:

• Question number and total (e.g., "Question 34 of 150")
• A timer counting down your remaining time
• The question with four multiple-choice answers (A, B, C, D)
• Navigation buttons to go forward, go back, or flag a question for review
• An on-screen calculator (in most states)

The national portion typically has 80-100 questions, and the state-specific portion has 30-50 questions. Total time is usually 150-240 minutes depending on your state.

Time Management During the Exam

The Two-Pass Method

First pass (60% of your time): Go through every question in order. Answer the ones you know immediately. For questions you are unsure about, eliminate obviously wrong answers, make your best guess, and flag the question for review. Do not spend more than 90 seconds on any single question. Second pass (40% of your time): Return to your flagged questions. With fresh eyes and no time pressure from unanswered questions ahead, you will often see the correct answer more clearly.

What Happens When You Finish

If You Pass

Most PSI centers give you your results immediately on screen after you submit. You will see a score report showing:

• Your overall score (pass/fail)
• Your performance by topic area
• Instructions for next steps

You will typically receive a printed score report at the front desk. In most states, your license application process begins within 1-2 business days, and you can start working under a sponsoring broker once your license is issued.

If You Don't Pass

Do not panic. The score report will show which topics you need to improve. This is valuable information. Most states allow you to retake the exam after a waiting period of 24 hours to 30 days, depending on the state.

10 Tips for Staying Calm on Exam Day

1. Sleep Over Studying

Do not cram the night before. Your brain consolidates memories during sleep. A well-rested mind performs better than an exhausted one stuffed with last-minute facts.

2. Eat a Balanced Breakfast

Eat protein and complex carbs. Avoid excessive caffeine — it can increase anxiety and make you need bathroom breaks (which eat into your exam time).

3. Arrive Early, But Don't Study in the Parking Lot

Cramming in the car creates anxiety. If you arrive early, listen to music, take deep breaths, or review your Exam Day Checklist one final time.

4. Use the Tutorial to Settle In

The tutorial period is your transition time. Use it to get comfortable with the chair, the screen, and the mouse. Take a few deep breaths.

5. Read Every Question Twice

Exam questions often contain qualifying words like "EXCEPT," "NOT," "ALWAYS," or "MOST LIKELY." Missing these words is the number one cause of wrong answers.

6. Cover the Answers First

Read the question stem before looking at the answer choices. Form your own answer, then see which choice matches. This prevents you from being tricked by plausible-sounding wrong answers.

If you feel overwhelmed, close your eyes for 10 seconds. Take three slow breaths. This resets your focus without wasting significant time.

10. Remember: 60-75% Is Passing

You do not need a perfect score. Most states require 60-75% to pass. That means you can miss 25-40% of the questions and still earn your license.

The Night Before: Your Final Checklist
