In short
Under the Conceptual Framework, useful financial information must be relevant and faithfully represented; those are the two fundamental qualitative characteristics. Comparability, verifiability, timeliness and understandability enhance useful information but cannot make irrelevant or unfaithful information useful.
- Relevance covers predictive value, confirmatory value and materiality.
- Faithful representation means complete, neutral and free from error.
- Materiality is entity-specific, and prudence never permits deliberate understatement.

Hook
A number can be perfectly accurate, and still be useless to an investor. So what makes financial information useful? The Framework has an answer.
Two pillars
Useful information stands on two pillars. The first is relevance: it can make a difference to a decision. It helps users predict the future, or confirms what they predicted before. And it's material: leave it out, and a user might decide differently. The second pillar is faithful representation. The picture is complete, neutral, and free from error.
Enhancers
Then four more qualities make good information better. Comparability, verifiability, timeliness and understandability. But they can't rescue information that is irrelevant or unfaithful.
Myths
Pause. Myth one: is materiality set at 5% of profit? No. Materiality is specific to each entity. There is no single threshold. Myth two: prudence lets you understate assets, just to be safe. No. Prudence is caution, and it supports neutrality. No deliberate bias. Myth three: using FIFO every year makes the accounts comparable. That's consistency. It helps, but comparability is the goal.
